Overview

Rara Lake (2,990 m) is Nepal's largest lake, and a remote jewel of western Nepal that many Nepalis call the most beautiful place in the country.

The deep-blue lake covers 10.8 km², ringed by primeval pine and fir forest, and on windless mornings it mirrors the surrounding mountains. Because it is so hard to reach, visitors are few, and a silence reigns here that the popular Everest and Annapurna trails cannot offer.

The encircling Rara National Park is Nepal's smallest national park, yet a richly biodiverse reserve — home to rare wildlife such as Himalayan thar, musk deer, and red panda, and renowned as a spot for birdwatching.

It cannot be reached easily, as everything depends on the flight schedule — but that only makes the moment of arrival all the more moving. Here, an unspoilt Himalayan landscape survives, far from any tourist trail.

Highlights

  • Rara — Nepal's largest alpine lake (2,990 m)
  • Few tourists, untouched nature
  • One of Nepal's most celebrated views — a place Nepalis themselves aspire to visit
  • A rare, genuine wilderness experience in remote western Nepal
  • A rich ecosystem — home to red panda, Himalayan thar, and musk deer
  • Primeval forest and deep silence around the lakeshore

Itinerary

Day 1

Kathmandu → Nepalgunj

A morning or afternoon domestic flight to Nepalgunj, the gateway to western Nepal. Close to the Indian border, this town has grown as the air hub for the Himalayan region. On arrival, check in to your hotel and prepare for the next morning's Talcha flight.
Overnight: Nepalgunj

Day 2

Nepalgunj → Talcha → Rara Lake

An early flight to Talcha airstrip (about 35–45 minutes); in clear weather the window frames the mountains of western Nepal. From Talcha it is roughly 45 minutes by vehicle or on foot to Rara Lake, whose deep-blue water and dense conifer forest create a scene quite unlike anywhere else in Nepal. Spend the afternoon walking the shore or on a short hike to a viewpoint, and watch the lake deepen to indigo at dusk.
Overnight: Rara lakeside lodge

Day 3

Rara Lake → Talcha → Nepalgunj → Kathmandu

Weather permitting, take an early morning walk along the shore, with the lake and primeval forest lit by the rising sun. Then transfer to Talcha, fly to Nepalgunj, and connect onward to Kathmandu, arriving by evening.

Good to Know

  • Talcha flights are weather-sensitive; cancellations and delays can occur.
  • Flight schedules may require an extra night in Nepalgunj (at additional cost) — always plan an itinerary with buffer days.
  • Accommodation at the lake is a simple lodge.
