Watch the sunrise paint the Himalayan horizon from Nagarkot (2,195 m) — one of the finest vantage points in the Kathmandu Valley, with views stretching from Dhaulagiri in the west to Kanchenjunga in the east on a clear morning.
Perched on the eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley at 2,195 m, Nagarkot is the closest and most accessible Himalayan viewpoint to the capital. On clear mornings — most common in October, November, and late February through April — the sunrise panorama takes in over 200 km of Himalayan horizon, from Himalchuli and Manaslu in the west to Langtang, Dorje Lakpa, Gauri Shankar, Numbur, and Everest's distinctive silhouette to the east, and Kanchenjunga on the far horizon.
The early morning drive from Kathmandu takes about an hour and a half, making this a perfect add-on to any itinerary. After the sunrise you can stroll the forested ridge and enjoy an optional breakfast before returning to Thamel — or, on request, combine the morning with a visit to the historic Newari city of Bhaktapur.
Private vehicle collects you from your Thamel hotel before dawn for the 32 km drive up to Nagarkot.
Arrive before first light at the tower viewpoint. Watch the sky transform from deep purple to gold as the sun rises over the Himalayan arc — Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga on clear days.
After sunrise, take a short walk around the viewpoint and forested ridge. Breakfast at a nearby café or view restaurant is optional (own expense). Then return by private vehicle to your Thamel hotel in time for the day ahead.
On the way back you can add a visit to the medieval Newari city of Bhaktapur — Durbar Square, the Nyatapola Temple, and the Pottery Square — combining the Himalayan sunrise with Nepal's living history and culture in a single morning.
