Overview

Kathmandu is at its most beautiful before the tourists wake. Step into the quiet lanes at dawn and you'll find flower sellers opening their stalls, milk deliveries making their rounds, and people offering prayers at the temples. This is a roughly 2-hour morning walking tour through the lively Asan Bazaar and the faith-filled Indra Chowk, finishing with a Nepali breakfast.

Why not walk the "everyday Kathmandu" that the guidebooks miss, together with a local guide? With a small-group format (maximum 6 people), you can take your time and feel the breath of the city in the morning.

Highlights

  • Explore the back lanes of dawn Kathmandu, before the tourists arrive
  • Experience Asan Bazaar โ€” one of Kathmandu's largest markets โ€” at its liveliest hour
  • The early-morning market at Indra Chowk and prayers at the Akash Bhairav temple
  • Flower sellers, milk deliveries, morning worship โ€” everyday life you won't meet as a tourist
  • A Nepali breakfast and chiya at a local eatery โ€” sel roti, lentil curry, and more
  • A small-group (max 6), rain-or-shine local experience

Itinerary

6:30

Meet in Thamel

Meet your guide at the appointed spot and set out into the still-quiet morning streets.

6:40

Chhetrapati

Watch the day begin for local people. Flower sellers, milk deliveries, morning worship โ€” the everyday scenes you rarely meet as a tourist unfold around you.

6:55

Asan Bazaar

One of Kathmandu's largest markets at its liveliest hour. The scent of spices, heaped vegetables, shoppers coming and going โ€” experience the real kitchen of Kathmandu, not a version laid on for tourists.

7:20

Indra Chowk

A street corner that has thrived as a commercial hub since ancient times. The lane from Asan to Indra Chowk hosts a fruit-and-vegetable market that appears only in the early morning, with a buzz quite different from the daytime. Watch people praying at the Akash Bhairav temple and the bead sellers' stalls as you feel the morning pulse of the city.

7:45โ€“8:30

Breakfast at a Local Eatery

Head to an eatery beloved by locals. Enjoy a Nepali breakfast of sel roti, lentil curry, and chiya while you chat with your guide. This is actually the most popular part โ€” your chance to ask about travel and about life in Nepal.

Good to Know

  • The route is flat, so it suits those who aren't confident in their fitness.
  • You'll walk on cobblestones and uneven ground, so please wear comfortable shoes.
  • The soft morning light is also perfect for photography.
  • The small-group format (max 6) lets you enjoy the walk at a relaxed pace.
  • Please arrive at the meeting point at least 5 minutes before departure.

Mornings in Kathmandu are pleasant for walking all year round, and this tour runs even in the rain. In fact, Asan Bazaar on a drizzly day has a charm all its own โ€” wet cobblestones lend an atmosphere quite different from clear skies.
