Nepal's most accessible alpine valley — a stunning corridor of yak pastures, ancient Tamang villages, glacier viewpoints, and the spiritual heart of Kyanjin Gompa, just two days from Kathmandu.
The Langtang Valley trek is one of Nepal's premier alpine routes, exploring Langtang National Park north of Kathmandu. As you gain height along the deep valley carved by the Langtang Khola river, subtropical forest gives way to yak pastures and finally to a magnificent high-alpine world ringed by glaciers and snow peaks.
The trek's end point, Kyanjin Gompa (3,870 m), is a quiet settlement of ancient Buddhist temples and stone houses. Behind it rise a wall of snow peaks led by Langtang Lirung (7,227 m) — the signature view of the Langtang valley.
On the acclimatisation day, Kyanjin Ri (4,773 m) is a superb viewpoint reachable in a relatively short climb, with the Langtang Glacier and the entire valley spread out below. With energy to spare and good weather, the higher Tsergo Ri (4,984 m) is also an option.
Less crowded than Everest or Annapurna yet still offering genuine high-alpine scenery, Langtang has earned high praise in recent years from trekkers looking for a quiet, quintessentially Nepali trail.
Drive north along the mountain road that follows the Trishuli river to Syabrubesi, the gateway to the Langtang trek. The journey passes terraced fields and rolling hill country on the way to the Himalayan foothills. Approx. 5–6 hours by vehicle.
Enter Langtang National Park. The trail follows the Langtang Khola river, climbing through bamboo and oak forest. With luck you may spot a red panda or langur monkeys. Approx. 6–7 hours.
Above the tree line the views open onto high-alpine scenery dotted with yak pastures. As you reach the rebuilt Langtang village, the snow peaks at the head of the valley reveal themselves. Approx. 6 hours.
Follow a gentle valley scattered with mani walls and chortens to Kyanjin Gompa, the innermost settlement of the Langtang valley. The afternoon is free to explore the area or visit the yak cheese factory. Approx. 3–4 hours.
Climb Kyanjin Ri for both acclimatisation and the view — a grand panorama of Langtang Lirung, Dorje Lakpa, the Langtang Glacier, and out toward the Tibetan plateau. Those with energy to spare can attempt the higher Tsergo Ri (4,984 m). Approx. 4–5 hours.
Retrace the route, dropping steadily down the valley. The snow peaks appear from new angles as you descend back into the forest. Approx. 6–7 hours.
Descend along the Langtang Khola back to Syabrubesi, the start of the trek. A soak in the local hot springs is a fine way to ease away the journey's fatigue. Approx. 5–6 hours.
Leave the Himalayan foothills behind and return to Kathmandu — a short but full trek through one of Nepal's finest glacier valleys and its rich mountain culture. Approx. 5–6 hours by vehicle.
